About NACFL's Purpose
NAM-inspired path to nursing-led health equity in Florida.
Operationalizing National Nursing Recommendations
The Nursing Action Coalition of Florida (NACFL) is the state-level force dedicated to putting national vision into local action. Our central aim revolves around operationalizing the key recommendations from this landmark study, specifically those aimed at ensuring nurses have the necessary education, supportive work environments, and autonomy demanded to fulfill their vital role in society.
NAM Report Implementation & Focus
The new National Academy of Medicine (NAM) report, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030, Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity, was made available to Action Coalitions in May 2021. The Nursing Action Coalition of Florida (NACFL) immediately began reaching out to state leaders to join the effort to operationalize the report’s recommendations. Our group is currently focusing on four of the nine recommendations for the 2022-2023 period.
Coalition Membership & Expertise
NACFL has already gained commitment from approximately sixty members and organizations across the state. Our central mission is driven by your professional knowledge: our goal is to secure your expertise to assist the Coalition in the operationalization of the NAM Recommendations in Florida. There is no cost to join this vital effort.
Mission & Vision
Mission
To champion a culture of health for the people of Florida by fostering health equity and improving outcomes through nursing and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Vision
A healthy Florida where all people can achieve optimum health and well-being.
NACFL History
Issues regarding the role of nurses in health care have been a topic of concern for decades. In October 2010, following a two-year investigation of national experts coordinated by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), a landmark report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” was released. It delineated how nursing can contribute to an improved American health care delivery system.
As a result of the initial IOM report, a national collaboration was formed between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the AARP Foundation, named the “Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action,” to implement the report’s recommendations. The Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA), located at AARP, oversaw the national effort to achieve the IOM recommendations and provide technical support to those involved at the state and local levels.
In 2011, the national campaign’s leadership directed the creation of 51 state action coalitions. The Florida Action Coalition (FL-AC) was created. Unfortunately, the FL-AC was closed in 2018 when the Florida Center for Nursing closed. In 2022, the FL-AC reopened and is now called the Nursing Action Coalition of Florida (NACFL). The co-leads for NACFL are the Florida Nurses Association and the Florida Department of Health.
The NACFL invited state leaders both inside and outside nursing to participate, including elected officials, health industry executives, physicians and other health professionals, educators, philanthropists, AARP Florida, and business leaders. Today, we have over sixty members working together to improve health for our citizens.
In May 2021, the new National Academy of Medicine (NAM) report, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity, was made available to Action Coalitions. NACFL members began to reach out to leaders across the state to join our work to operationalize the recommendations from the NAM report. Today, we have approximately sixty members and/or organizations that have joined the coalition. Our group is focusing on four of the nine NAM recommendations for 2022-2024.
The IOM report’s 40-plus recommendations were condensed into eight primary recommendations for advancing nursing in the United States. These, in turn, have been assigned to one of four focus areas/pillars by the national “Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action.”
